Herbert Dahm’s love of sailing is a love of life. The eye for detail, the pleasure in finding technical solutions which make life aboard easier, and the challenges of regatta tactics and technique have fascinated him since his childhood days.
But Dahm’s early career initially took him in a different direction. His main business was selling radios and TVs, and later developing the first electronic billing machine and special financial software – water sports were merely a hobby.
In 1967, he met shipyard owner Jan Jongert, who was to build Dahm’s first yacht. From this yacht sale, a business partnership quickly developed and Dahm became famous as the marketing and exclusive sales representative of the Dutch shipyard.
Early on, Herbert Dahm had the opportunity to make his contribution to the development of the Jongert yachts through his inventive talent and creativity.
The “passion for perfection” was the be-all and end-all not just for his own yachts: his innovations for other owners as well set standards which are still to be found today in the details of any large yacht. For example, the stern hatch through which the tender can easily be brought from the garage on board and which also serves as a swim platform, or the increasing use of hydraulics on board.
Dahm has had a role in, and has helped determine, the decisive steps in the development of yacht construction, right up to the maxi- and superyacht level. He has also incidentally played a decisive part in the resounding success of the largest water sport show in the world – from his home in Düsseldorf.
From the very first day, his company dahm international was an exhibitor at the boot boat show; for decades, it regularly presented the biggest ship at the show. In 1995, the year which saw the largest number of visitors, Dahm was president of the boot and was able to welcome royal customers to Düsseldorf: Prince Rainier of Monaco and his son Prince Albert as partners of the boot.
In the meantime, Dahm has acted as a broker for reams of ships – new and second-hand vessels, sailing and motor yachts, for entrepreneurs and aristocrats alike. For five years he played a leading role in the success of the Italian noble motor yacht shipyard Benetti, where he was a partner and sales representative. His own 35-metre Benetti Classic MY WAY is the most striking result of this creative period – her equipment includes not only a complete sauna landscape, but also her own 25-foot sailer racer TRUE LOVE with a permanent “berth” on the flybridge of the MY WAY.
“From my first Jongert BLACK MOLLY I to MEPHISTO and INSPIRATION, all the way to the Benetti MY WAY – I have always tried something new, have always set the highest quality standards with the aim of improving the tried-and-tested and developing the new. In doing so, I always focussed on the special requirements and requests of the owners and of the yacht,” says Herbert Dahm.
There’s hardly anybody else who is so inseparably linked to the scene as this man from the Rhineland, who sails his legendary masterpiece INSPIRATION successfully at regattas year after year.
Herbert Dahm networks in many ways with well-know shipyards and design companies, highly-specialised engineers and service providers – with his inexhaustible creativity and fresh pioneering spirit, Dahm, with his old and new company, was and remains one of the few true greats in the world of yachting; he is a reliable consultant and a trustworthy partner.
